So life has had some ups and downs over the past 5 or 6 days and I hope I'm sorted medically for the next two weeks! After discovering my broken thumb needed surgery, I also discovered that my travel medical coverage would not pay for it and advised that I fly home....which I did not want to do! I still have 2 weeks of my trip left which includes travelling round the North Island with my friend/pen pal/third cousin Lindsay from England who I haven't seen for 4 years!!
After a frantic phonecall home and to a friend who lives here in New Zealand some prayer, and a chat with the receptionist at emergency, I concluded that ACC which covers accidental injuries in New Zealand should cover my surgery and I was going to stay and pray for the best.
I spent the weekend enjoying the Nelson Market which reminded me of Saltspring down at the coast, an awesome church service at the Nelson City Church, and a walk up to the Centre of New Zealand overlooking Nelson city and then continuing the walk down to the white sandy beach.
On Monday morning I was off to the hospital where I spent most of the day waiting around for my turn. When I was finally up on the table in my ridiculous hospital gown and booties they filled one arm with general anesthetic and sawed off my cast on the other and the next thing I knew I was in recovery. I decided to spend the night in hospital instead of the backpackers and finally was discharged at 11am on Tuesday. Slightly sore and with a new plaster cast.
Hoping to get down to Christchurch via Oxford to fly to Auckland tomorrow and meet up with Lindsay.
Have been blessed with so many kind people in the backpackers who have been helping me cook, and even drove me to the hospital! It's amazing just how many things you use your thumb for. My teacher printing is pretty sad at the moment, although the receptionists in the hospital assure me it's still legible! Whenever I pay for something with my credit card I pray that the PIN will work and I don't have to sign!!
Prayer requests for quick healing of the incision, and safe travels tomorrow as well as continuing to prepare to return home, not too many sad goodbyes in Oxford and also meeting great people along my travels.

Julie...Finally caught up with all your adventures after chatting with Joan re Melanie and baby Caleb spending July and August here. Sounds like you have been exploring NZ, one of my favourite countries and I recognize many of the places you mentioned, visiting them when living in Christchurch for 2 months many years ago. Travel safely, God bless, and know that you have a bed in Victoria anytime.
Hugs
Ann
